Xi’an International Horticultural Expo 2011 (西安世园会) – May 2011

So, back in May of 2011 the International Horticultural Expo opened in Xi’an. Right off the bat, I’ll be honest – I have little to no interest in flowers or plants. But, it was just a stone’s throw away from me, and everybody was talking about it. So, myself, Beryl and Winfred headed there armed with our cameras…
A huge sign welcoming you to the expo, so, here’s an obligatory Asian-person-in-front-of-sign photo.
I’m gonna run out of things to say about plants and flowers VERY quickly. This is a flower.
This is a flower with… an… insect.
Beryl taking some photos. (Some of these photos are her’s. I can’t remember which ones.)
Winfred not taking some photos. (Again, some of these photos are his.)
One great thing about travelling with a fellow photographer – good photos of me and B!
So, they had ‘gardens’ for various countries and cities. This was the one for Weinan! Woop woop!
Me and Winfred. The right photo is a small model of Hua shan. Regular readers will be familiar with that mountain.
Lighters were banned from the event. That meant smokers (like Winfred) got very excited if they saw someone else with a lit cigarette, as it meant they could ‘steal’ a light. After Winfred lit his cigarette from another guy, he then in turn re-lit about 5 people’s cigarettes. It was amusing.
Some of the gazillion volunteers who were helping run the place.
While I was going around I was speculating the value of all the cameras in the park combined. Even the point-and-shoots; their sheer number must have meant there were millions of dollars worth.
There were lots of people napping.
People watching passed the time and broke the boredom of gazillions of flowers.
Finally found the ‘England’ garden – it was tiny and a bit pants!
There were some crazy mirrors. Party like it’s 1990!
You don’t wanna get clawed by that!
Some sort of blue-faced monkey.
There were long queues to get into some of the pagodas. Nothing else to do put people-watch!
I thought this was pretty rad.
I though this bike was pretty cool too.
