A few weeks ago I took a trip to Fuping county with some Chinese friends. One of my friends has a business exporting dried persimmon to Korea. In fact, I had no idea what a persimmon was, so I was quite intrigued…
Fuping is a county of Weinan. So, the whole Chinese city-county-town-province-blah-blah system is quite complicated. Weinan is actually a Municipality (prefecture-level city) and so “Weinan” can refer to both the city I live in, and the prefecture of Weinan; which is over 5,000 square miles… in comparison greater London is only 600 square miles, and Staffordshire 1,000 square miles. So, Fuping is one of eight counties within Weinan… however, “Fuping” is also the name of the town, I think…argh, I don’t know – it’s confusing! But what I am sure of (according to Wikipedia!) is that Fuping itself has 24 towns and 337 villages. It’s mostly rural, and I think it looks kinda neat in winter… see above! 🙂
So, here it is… the Persimmon. Wikipedia can tell you more, here. Being winter, most of them were long gone from the trees, which made picking them a rather hard task.
All of the remaining ones were high, high up in the trees.
The fruit itself is like a thin bag containing the juice/sap. It’s very thick with a consistency comparable to jam. Some of them burst on their own, or by animals, and are left hanging like this.
Some of the picking didnt go to plan. Resulting in the sticky insides getting splattered all over hair and clothing.
But when it did go right, the result was a nice, juicy persimmon waiting to be sucked dry. 🙂
Again, I think Fuping is quite a beautiful place.
All in all it was a great trip, with a surprise ending…more on that in the next post – coming soon!
Oh, and as a P.S: My friend gave me a huge box of dried persimmon to enjoy! 🙂
